Aromatherapy Candles

Brain Health Research Brain Image Processing Brain Visual Memory

Brain is one of the most complex structures of our body and scientists are researching continuously to understand its structure and working pattern. Researchers at University of California, Berkeley (UCB) found some interesting facts about brain’s working on images.

Visual Memory covers a large part of brain. 20% of our brain contains images and it store images in a well mannered manner. These images are stored in an overlapping pattern, which help us in face recognition and other day-to-day work. Their research is about the storage pattern of these images and how we can extract that information. All this study might be useful in making fast image processors in future computers. Image processing is a very fast process of brain that no computer can match.

Our brain can store thousands of faces and their names and we rarely forget those faces. Sometimes it take time remember the name but it has 99% accuracy. And this is count of faces only. We also remember places, roads, objects and a lot more things. According to a research our brain can store more than 3 times of information stored in Britannica Encyclopaedia. It’s just an average; some people with higher IQ have much more capability.

A healthy body needs a healthy brain. And researches are going on around the globe to find an answer to complexity of brain and its functions. We should hope that these researches will lead to a more healthy life.

Slow Cooker Chocolate Pot de Creme with ganache! Recipe



 

YUM. Chocolate.

Ive got a root canal (or two) scheduled in the very near future (you can read about my teeth here. and here. in case youre interested. which you probably shouldnt be, because thats kind of weird. but whatever. you might be a weird person, and thats okay with me. I dont judge.) and so Ive decided that I might as well just eat huge bowlfuls of sugar.

Im fascinated at how the crockpot can make a delicate dessert when its used as a bain marie, or water bath. Its both fancy and easy at the same time. Easy Fancy.

The Ingredients.
serves 8
 
5 egg yolks
2 cups heavy cream
1/2 cup bakers sugar (I like how fine the granules are in bakers sugar)
1 tablespoon vanilla extract (not a typo. a whole tablespoon!)
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

ganache topping:
1/2 cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup heavy cream


The Directions.

Use a 6-quart slow cooker with an inserted oven-safe dish that fits all the way inside your stoneware. (I use a 1 1/2 quart oval Corningware dish. ) Add water around the dish until reaching the halfway point on the side (about 1/2 to 1 cup of water).

In a mixing bowl, whip together the yolks, cream, sugar, vanilla, and cocoa powder. Pour this mixture into your inserted dish. Cover the slow cooker and cook on high for 2 to 4 hours. Your custard should be set in the center and not too jiggly. Touch it lightly with your finger---you shouldnt get a bunch of gook on your finger.

Unplug your cooker and let it cool for an hour or so, or until you can safely remove the inserted dish. Refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours, or until fully cool. 

To make the ganache (this is optional, but its so good and so easy, you really should just make it and impress yourself):  Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave (not long---30 seconds or so, then add a few at a time--dont scorch the chocolate!), and whisk in the heavy cream until its fully incorporated. Pour evenly over the top. Return to the refrigerator for ANOTHER 2-3 hours (this is the hard part) before serving.

The Verdict.

Sometimes I feel stupid writing these verdicts. This is chocolate cream mousse with an additional layer of chocolate frosting.
HOW COULD IT NOT BE GOOD?!

CrockPot Whole Turkey Recipe

Day 324.

I did it. A whole turkey in the crock.

I am officially turkeyed out.


I was able to fit a 9.5 lb turkey into a 6.5 quart crockpot. It was a tight squeeze, and this is the absolute largest turkey you should attempt to cook----even if you have a 7 quart crockpot. The meat needs to reach 140 degrees after 3 hours of cooking on high to keep it in the "safe zone" for consumption.

I was hoping youd ask! I learned this by participating in a live webchat hosted by Butterball, and their trained Turkey-Talk Bloggers. Chris Jordan, from Notes from the Trenches, and Susan Wagner, from Friday Playdate are fresh out of Turkey U. and are eager to help families with their burning (simmering) turkey questions.

You can ask anything turkey. Chris only slightly snickered when I asked where the thigh is. (guess what? its not on the drumstick at all---its the part where the drumstick connects to the bird. huh.) There is another chat scheduled for November 25, or you can call 1-800-BUTTERBALL.

The Ingredients.

--turkey (9.5 lbs is the MAXIMUM to fit in a 6.5 quart crockpot)
--olive oil

--salt
--pepper

--garlic powder
--dried parsley
--onion

--apple (I used yellow)

--meat thermometer (necessity, not a luxury. go get one if you need it)

The Directions.


Your turkey must be completely and totally thawed. Seriously. Call the Butterball hotline if you dont know how to do this safely.

I took a lot of the skin off. You dont have to, the skin seems to magically brown a bit in the crock, but I have weird skin issues.

Remove the neck and the bag of stuff they put inside the turkey. If youre going to use it to make stuffing or something, do that, but please dont tell me.


Pat the turkey with paper towels to dry it off. Rub a handful of olive oil all over the bird, inside and out. Sprinkle salt, pepper, dried parsley, and garlic powder all over and in it, and rub it around. If you have a secret family concoction of herbs, by all means, use it.

Peel an onion, quarter it, and shove inside. Core an apple and do the same.

Lower the bird into your crockpot. I wanted to put it in breast-side down, but Chris and Mary (from Butterball) said not to. So I put it right-side up.

Cover. Cook on high for 3 hours, then check the internal temperature. You need the turkey to register at least 140 degrees.


Cover again and cook on high for another few hours. I needed to leave the house, and this turkey cooked on high for a bit over 5 hours. Check the internal temp again in a few places. It should be 170 degrees or higher. You can certainly cook it longer if needed, or keep it on warm until you are ready to carve.

CAREFULLY remove turkey from crockpot. The edges will have browned nicely. If youd like, you can broil the top for a few minutes in the oven--put the turkey in a roasting pan, dont use the crock. I tried this, and was pleased with how the turkey looked afterwards. I broiled for about 7 minutes.

Let sit for 15-20 minutes before carving.


The Verdict.


Im so happy this worked. I feel.... relieved. Like my shoulders have lost a lot of tension, which is weird, but I must have been worrying about this sub-consciously for a while or something.

My kids didnt eat it. They had no interest. I gave them frozen corn and barbecued beans from a can.

My parents ate a bunch, and so did Adam.

I had a turkey sandwich around 9pm.

CrockPot Blue Cheese Potato Soup with Olive Tapenade


Day 189.

I found a Swanson Broth recipe book at the grocery store a few months ago, and impulsively bought it. I like soup, and most soup recipes (I would say all, but they threw in some gazpacho) can be converted nicely to slow-cooking.

I thought the name of this soup sounded fancy and sheeshy, and folded the corner of the page down as soon as I read the title.

I finally had the chance to make it this weekend.

The Ingredients.
--12-15 red baby potatoes (chopped, but not skinned)
--4 cups vegetable broth (I would have bought Swansons to be supportive, but my regular grocery store didnt have any--just beef and chicken. So I went to Trader Joes.)

--1 T balsamic vinegar

--1 chopped white onion

--4 cloves smashed and chopped garlic

for garnish: -

-1 T prepared olive tapenade (I needed to go to Trader Joes for this, too)

--crumbled blue cheese


The Directions.


Wash and cube the red potatoes, and throw into the crockpot. Chop up the white onion and garlic, and add them, too. Cover vegetables with the broth, and stir in one tablespoon of balsamic vinegar.


Cover your crockpot with its lid, and cook on low for 7-8 hours, or on high for about 5. This is finished when the potatoes and onion are tender.


Use a stick-blender to soupify. The soup will be a cross between a soup and chowder in consistency.
Top with crumbled blue cheese and olive tapenade.

The Verdict.


This is not good soup. There is hardly any flavor at all, and the color was gross. I didnt like the
consistency, either. The only somewhat redeeming value was the blue cheese and the tapenade, but you could put that on a boiled giraffes tongue and it would taste good. I should have known when I couldnt find the recipe posted on Swansons website. grr. The picture looked so good, though...

an excerpt from the Introduction:

There are over 200 brand-new recipes in this book that have not been shared in the first Make It Fast, Cook It Slow cookbook.  I have separated the book into three sections: $7 and under, $10 and under, and $15 and under dishes. Within each section, there are chapters for beverages, appetizers, soups and stews, side dishes, main courses, and desserts. The main-course selections are bountiful, because I believe this is the most beneficial. 

I live in the SF Bay Area, which happens to be a terribly expensive place to live. The prices in this book are from my own hometown, from my own (regional chain) grocery store. I did not use coupons to purchase the food, although I did choose to buy items when they were on sale, and chose store brand items if the per-ounce cost was less expensive than that of the name brand.
Because of this, you may find that by shopping with the store circulars in your area, or by using coupons, or by purchasing meat in bulk at a warehouse store, you can find food at a lower price, and that my prices seem inflated. Im okay with that! Id much rather err on the side of overestimating the costs. 

In the past, many slow-cooker meals were made cheaply because they revolved around canned cream-of-something soup. While I do think there is a place in the world for condensed soup, this book does not have a single recipe that calls for this ingredient. My family doesnt use this product due to allergy and health concerns, and since so many recipes already exist with this key ingredient, I wanted to step away and prove to myself (and others!) that inexpensive slow cooker dishes can be made without it. I am such a sucker for a challenge. 

As in the first cookbook, everything has been prepared completely gluten-free. If you are not gluten-free, simply ignore my notes, or file them away in case you ever need to cook for someone with a gluten sensitivity.

CrockPot Meatloaf Recipe

In honor of Retro Week, I finally made meatloaf last night in the crockpot. If you google meatloaf in crockpot or crockpot meatloaf you will get a bazillion different ways to make meatloaf in the crock. I got overwhelmed reading them, and decided to make it the way that I always make meatloaf: throw in what I feel like at the time and hope for the best.

The very first time I made meatloaf kind of traumatized me, so I dont make it very often.

We were living in a 2-bedroom apartment with shag-green carpet, and the kitchen was teeny-tiny. My eldest was a newborn, maybe only 6 to 8 weeks of age, and the kid DID. NOT. SLEEP. like at all.

I hadnt gone back to any sort of work yet, and had regained some energy, so I decided to pop her into the sling and walk to the store, hoping shed fall asleep on the way. She did. I called Adam and told him Id make whatever he wanted for dinner. He picked meatloaf. Okay, then, meatloaf it was. I gathered the ingredients I thought I would need, and remembered to sway and jostle properly, so the baby wouldnt awaken. I somehow managed to get home the mile walk from the store, with a bag in each hand without waking the baby.

I was ecstatic.

I unloaded everything--except the baby. There was no way that I was going to disturb her sleep for anything.

I remember flipping on the stereo, and opening the front door and the windows to get a bit of air into the stuffy apartment while I got to work on the meatloaf. I had no idea what I was doing, but started cramming different shredded vegetables, breadcrumbs and pasta sauce into a bread pan.

I cracked an egg, and heard a bellow from the open front door, "UPS!"

I screamed, and dropped the egg.

Into the sling, and onto my newborns head.

She was covered in raw egg.

And she woke up.
And we both cried.

I didnt make another meatloaf for four years.


BUT! I made one yesterday. For you people. ;-)


The Ingredients.

This is what I did. You can use your favorite secret family recipe. -- Just keep the proportions pretty much the same -- use 1 to 2 pounds of ground meat.

1 pound lean ground turkey
-1/2pound lean ground beef
1 chopped red bell pepper (take out the seeds!)
--1/4 cup uncooked brown rice
1 (14.4-ounce) can of tomatoes with Italian seasoning (the whole can, juice too!)
1 tablespoon A-1 sauce
1 tablespoon dried, minced onion flakes OR 1 packet onion soup mix (this is usually not gluten free, be careful and read ingredients well!)
1 large egg
1/4 cup (or so) of ketchup

The Directions.

--in a mixing bowl, combine all of the ingredients except for the ketchup and mix. I always use my hands, because thats what my mom does. Remember where you put your rings!

--squirt the ketchup all over the top.

You can put the entire meat mixture directly into your crockpot, or you can put it into a heat-resistant dish inserted into your crock. It is your choice. I used my 6qt Smart Pot, and put a loaf pan into it. What I like about using the loaf pan is that the fat kind of bubbles up and out over the top of the pan and then collects in the crock.

I wish I had one of those insert things that goes in the loaf pan for meatloaf with the little holes so the fat can drain. But I dont.

If your crock is only 4 qts, just plop the meat into the crock. You can suck away some of the fat that collects on the top with paper towels a few hours into cooking time if it grosses you out.

Cover and cook on high for 4 hours, or on low for 6-8. The meat is done when it is brown and fully cooked when you cut into it.

Let the meat sit for about 30 minutes before you slice and serve.

The Verdict.

I didnt let my meat sit long enough and it fell apart. It was kind of like meatloaf hash. It tasted wonderful, but I was bummed that it didnt slice the way that I knew it could if I hadnt rushed the process.



My parents came for dinner and liked it, and took home some leftovers. They fed the kids while Adam and I went for a run, and the kids ate it for them. I think grandma and grandpa should come over for dinner more often---the kids eat MUCH better for them.

Sodium Deficiency Diseases Symptoms Causes and Treatment

Coma and death are result of extreme cases of Sodium Deficiency. Age also plays an important role in severity of symptoms. Old age people will have more adverse condition then a younger person with same level of sodium deficiency.

Sodium Deficiency Treatment


If the condition is not much adverse then doctors might suggest you to take good amount of salt in your diet, as salt is the main source of Sodium in our diet. If the patient is not able to take salt in diet then he/she may take capsules of salt (it will remove the feeling of Salt on tongue, as the capsule will dissolve in stomach).

In some extreme case doctors might suggest the patient to take saline through blood. Its directly induced into blood stream just like glucose. Its an easier way to increase Sodium level at a faster rate.

Facts about Sodium in our body

  • Normal blood sodium levels fall between 135 and 145 mEq/L
  • Sodium deficiency is known as Hyponatremia
  • Overhydration, burns, diarrhea and vomiting may cause sodium levels to drop
  • Low sodium level causes expanding of tissue cells. Our brain cant handle this increase of size of cells and create abnormalities in body which results in various symptoms.

Brie with Apricot Topping CrockPot Recipe

I didnt even try to light this properly and attempt a nice picture. Instead, I removed the stoneware from the base, wrapped it up in a beach towel, grabbed a sleeve of crackers and plopped on the couch in front of the TV. When Adam or the kids got near, I snarled and batted them away with my arm.

This couldnt possibly taste any better.

The Ingredients.

--1 large round or wedge of brie (the round I used was 13.2 oz)
--1/2 cup chopped dried apricots
--2 T brown sugar
--2 T water
--1 tsp balsamic vinegar
--1/4 tsp dried rosemary
--1/2 cup chopped walnuts

The Directions.

I used a 1.5 mini round crockpot. If you are going to use a big one, put the brie in an oven-safe dish. As long as the dish and the crockpot heat together, youre all good.

If your brie has a really hard rind, cut the top part off. This was the first time I had used this brand of brie---Ive always reached for the stuff from Trader Joes---and I was alarmed at how thick the rind was.

Put the brie into the crockpot.

In a bowl, mix the chopped apricots, balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, water and rosemary together. Spoon on top of the brie.
Sprinkle on the chopped walnuts.

Cover and cook on high for 1-2 hours, or on low for about 3. Check after an hour in both cases just in case.

Serve with your favorite crackers or apple slices.

The Verdict.

I eventually shared with Adam. We had it as dinner.

The flavor is so amazing, and the brie got so gooey and amazing. I think I just drooled a bit.

CrockPot Leg of Lamb with Prunes Recipe


Im often asked what my favorite meal is that Ive made in the crockpot. I never really know how to answer, because I sort of have forgotten along the way what Ive made, and I feel weird picking just one thing out.

But. I can confidentaly answer that THIS is my favorite meal Ive made so far this year in the crockpot. Its also the only one Ive gotten to actually eat...

but whatever.

its delicious.

The Ingredients.

4 pounds boneless leg of lamb
1 teaspoon each of:
rosemary
cumin
kosher salt
pepper
4 cloves garlic, chopped
2 cups dried plums (dude. they are PRUNES!)
1/2 cup white wine (you could use apple juice)
1 cinnamon stick

The Directions.

Use a 4-5 quart crockpot. Put meat inside, and rub it on all sides with dry spices. Add garlic and prunes. Pour in wine, and toss in a cinnamon stick. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours, or on high for about 4. Id go with the longer and lower cooking time, though.

If youd like, remove meat from stoneware, and make a gravy out of accumulated juice with some cornstarch. The prunes will be awfully squishy, and can blend right in with the juice and cornstarch. Serve with mashed potatoes or polenta with gravy drizzled over the top.

The Verdict.

YUM. I loved this, and so did Adam and the kids. We sat. At the table. Together.
I even put the laptop away. It was a great dinner.

Gluten Free Search Engine

Not all of my readers are gluten free, I know.

If you arent gluten-free, feel free to file this away for a "just in case I need to cook for someone who happens to be gluten free" event or forward along to somebody you think might benefit.

We are a gluten free family because my 10 year old has Celiac, which is an intolerance to gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, and rye.

We dont miss gluten, it doesnt define us, and it just simply isnt something that I think about much except for when Im grocery shopping. 

All of the recipes that are on my website and in the cookbooks happen to be gluten-free, but many of my readers dont pay a lick of attention to the notes I put in parentheses, they are just here for the slow cooker recipes.

And that is WONDERFUL. I love that we can make Korean Soft Tacos and Lasagna and Cheesecake and nobody misses the gluten at all.


I have no problem finding a way to tweak recipes to make them gluten-free friendly; I think of it as a bit of a challenge. I already try to make everything crockpottable, why not gluten free to boot?

Back to my 10-year old. She loves to bake. Im not a big baker. I like boxed mixes and I am too absent-minded to pay attention to the oven when there is something in it. 

I regularly burn cookies.

But my fifth grader? She loves it. And she wants to make All The Things All By Herself.

This summer I was gardening and she rushed outside to tell me that she thought we had all the ingredients to make a fluffy version of a vanilla cupcake she saw on food network and asked how to make it gluten free.

DIET WHAT ABOUT ONLINE COACHING


Lasting weight loss is a goal that the vast majority of us do not reach. What solutions today?
Several nutritional coaching sites, the best known, that of Weight Watchers, appeared on the Web in recent years.
What are the advantages of online nutrition coaching compared to diets and dietary counseling programs?

Instructions for use of e-coaching and tips for choosing the right program.

What exactly is meant by coaching online?

Online coaching is a smart nutritional program based on computer expert systems or artificial intelligence systems, which adapts to the patients specificities as it evolves. Online coaching is very different programs that rely on computer media to deliver nutritional information, most often associated with telephone follow-up. Many of these commercial programs are available, but they have never been scientifically validated and clearly not fit all, as shown by the number of people who attempt the adventure and who drop quickly.
It is in this context that "intelligent" programs have been developed by hospital and university teams. One of them, entitled S.D.O.B.E. (Support Diabetes and Obesity by e-coaching). This program will be subject to rigorous scientific and medical evaluation, as testing any other treatment (medication, dietary supplement ...).

Who is nutritionally e-coaching?

Some predictive factors have been identified. Thus, the online coaching seems particularly speak to people who are used to connect to the Internet every day for one reason or another. Internet is part of their daily lives, they do not have to make an effort to go to connect.
People who also is a medical reason to change their eating habits, especially diabetics, hypertensives and in case of cholesterol, also seem to be more receptive to this method.

Note that there is no real relationship with age, although there is a better efficiency after 40 years (maximum 50 to 70 years). This can be explained by the fact that before 40 years, we have not yet tried every "miracle" diets is only after we return to more reasonable programs. Most young people want a quick and they do not have the same health concerns.

On the slope physical activity as an integral part of the program as well as the nutritional part, the principle is the same. It begins with an initial assessment, followed by gradual recommendations based on the data provided by the patient, that is to say on the type, frequency and regularity of actually performed physical activity.

How to choose the e-coaching?

Note: the e-coaching described above is to be distinguished from many other programs offered on the Internet. We must distinguish between diet programs in which you set yourself a goal in terms of weight. You then get the menus, more or less modifiable, allowing you to set up an often severe restrictive diet. The weight loss program is short and rigid, it does not evolve with you and do not teach you the nutritional rules.
In practice, a site that asks you on the home page how you want to lose weight and offers a loss of more than 5 to 10% of your weight is a site that is not in line with the recommendations of the authorities of health and which is not bonded.
The other big factor to consider is physical activity. Any nutritional program that does not include coaching in physical activity does not allow you to lose weight in the long term.

Diet and lowering cholesterol


The cholesterol-lowering diet and medications are very effective in reducing cholesterol levels, but also binding.

Another great rule to lose weight is to make physical activity as much as possible, even if it is moderate. This is not the intensity that matters most, but regularity. Also note that all adds: walking, DIY, gardening, climbing stairs, walking the dog ...
This lifestyle will benefit you throughout your life and your health in general. It would be a shame not to try before having to take medication every day and eliminate foods containing cholesterol!
